There are two main types of keys used in cryptography: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric ciphers use the same key for both encryption and decryption, while asymmetric ciphers use a pair of keys – one for encryption and another for decryption. This dual-key system enhances security, particularly in online transactions and communications.

The Roman leader Julius Caesar used a simple substitution cipher, known today as the Caesar cipher, to protect military messages. In this system, each letter in the plaintext was shifted a certain number of places down or up the alphabet. While primitive by today’s standards, such methods laid the groundwork for the sophisticated encryption techniques we use today.

In contemporary times, ciphers are a cornerstone of digital security. They are employed in various applications, from securing emails and protecting online transactions to safeguarding personal data on smartphones.
