What Is an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)?

The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is an open-source initiative developing a peer-to-peer file system. This ambitious project has the potential to revolutionize Internet usage by aiming to connect all devices with the same file system in a manner different from the current web infrastructure. To understand IPFS, it's beneficial to contrast it with HTTP. The traditional World Wide Web relies on the HTTP and HTTPS protocols, which are application protocols facilitating global data communication and accessibility.

IPFS vs. HTTP

When comparing IPFS to HTTP, IPFS boasts several advantages over HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) connections. These include lower operational costs, improved performance and security, data integrity, and resistance to censorship.

IPFS uses content identifiers to retrieve specific information that users are seeking, whereas HTTP connections direct users to a specific address or location. This means that IPFS focuses on "what" (content) while HTTP focuses on "where" (location).

As information on HTTP is stored and managed by a central server, the content is temporary and its accessibility can be affected by downtime or network congestion. In contrast, IPFS allows users to establish a permanent and decentralized web for storing and sharing files and digital data.
