Primary Functions of a Matching Engine:

Order Matching: The primary function of a matching engine is to match buy and sell orders based on predefined criteria like price and time. For example, it prioritizes multiple orders with the same price based on the time they were placed, following the principle known as "price-time priority."

How Matching Engine Works

When a trader places a buy or sell order, the order is entered into an order book. The matching engine then scans this order book to find corresponding buy and sell orders that can be matched based on the specified criteria. The process involves high-speed computations to ensure almost instantaneous order matching and execution.

The matching process follows two key rules:

Price Priority: Orders are matched based on the best available price.
