Federal Judge Dismisses Most Allegations Against OpenAI in Copyright Lawsuit

A federal judge has dismissed most of the allegations against OpenAI in a lawsuit brought by several authors, including Sarah Silverman and Paul Tremblay. The plaintiffs' claims of "vicarious copyright infringement" were dismissed due to lack of evidence, but the claim that OpenAI trained ChatGPT on copyrighted material without permission will proceed. Other claims, including negligence, fraud, unjust enrichment, and unlawful business practices, were also dismissed. The UCL claim can proceed, but there has been no comment from Silverman, Coates, and the Authors Guild. Other artists have pursued copyright infringement lawsuits against AI developers, but a federal judge ruled in October that plaintiffs did not provide enough evidence to support their claims.
