Former security engineer sentenced to three years in prison for hacking two DEXs and stealing over $12 million in crypto
Damian Williams, a federal prosecutor in the southern district of New York, announced that former security engineer Shakeeb Ahmed has been sentenced to three years in prison for hacking into two independent decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges and stealing over $12 million worth of cryptocurrency.Ahmed used false pricing data to attack the cryptocurrency exchanges and stole approximately $9 million in fees, and launched another attack on Nirvana Finance.He used various complex techniques to launder the stolen money, including converting fraudulent proceeds into untraceable cryptocurrency Monero and using overseas cryptocurrency exchanges and cryptocurrency mixers. The case was handled by the Illegal Finance and Money Laundering Unit and the Complex Fraud and Cybercrime Unit of the prosecutor's office.
