According to reports from Caixin, last autumn, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was first dismissed by the board, and then dramatically won back his position, resulting in a major turnover of board members. On Tuesday, former OpenAI board member Helen Toner harshly criticized Altman in an interview for his lack of transparency, which led to the board's ignorance of critical decisions made by OpenAI, and this was the reason why the board ultimately decided to dismiss him. Toner revealed that Altman had repeatedly concealed information from the board and distorted the company's ongoing business, and even lied to the board in some cases. Toner gave an example in the interview, stating that when OpenAI's flagship product ChatGPT first appeared in November 2022, almost none of the board members knew about it, and she only found out about it through Twitter. In addition, she pointed out that Altman had always claimed to be an independent board member of OpenAI, with no economic interests in the company, but in reality, he had been concealing the fact that he owned OpenAI's startup fund. What worried Toner even more was that Altman had provided inaccurate information to the board on the artificial intelligence security process and began lying, trying to drive her out of the board. This was the real reason that caused the board to collectively worry, and it was from that time that the board began discussing the matter of dismissing Altman.
