Péter Szilágyi, head of the Ethereum core development team, recently tweeted to criticize the direction of Ethereum's development and expressed concern about Ethereum's upcoming PeerDAS upgrade. He pointed out that some changes covered by the PeerDAS proposal, including a plan to increase the blob data size to 32MB, would result in extremely high network bandwidth requirements for block production, possibly reaching 2.5Gbit/s, hindering home nodes, which are usually equipped with simpler computing devices, from participating in the Ethereum network, which runs counter to the decentralized spirit of blockchain:

After Péter Szilágyi's remarks sparked discussion, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin also responded to his accusations through a series of tweets on the 27th, flatly denying any intention to centralize the Ethereum network, and emphasizing that the Ethereum team has been deeply involved in discussions aimed at minimizing centralization, rather than promoting centralization.


Vitalik Buterin emphasized several key initiatives and discussions within the Ethereum research community to ensure that the network remains decentralized, including:


· In-depth analysis of multiple proposers: The team has been exploring the potential of a multi-proposer system to more evenly distribute proposal power.


· Elimination of the builder role: Discussions are underway on whether the builder role can be eliminated to reduce central control points within the network.


· Fork Choice Optimization: Ideas have been exchanged on making fork choice dependent on transaction inclusion, which could help decentralize the block validation process.


· Orbit Single Slot Finality (SSF): Research is underway to accelerate the deployment of the Orbit mechanism, which aims to significantly reduce the minimum deposit size for validators and achieve single-slot finality, where blocks can be proposed and finalized in the same slot, an innovation that greatly improves Ethereum efficiency and reduces centralization risk.


· Distributed Block Construction with PeerDAS: The Ethereum team is also exploring distributed block construction technology with PeerDAS, which aims to more widely distribute control of block construction.


· Network Analysis and Bandwidth Optimization: Efforts are underway to optimize the network and bandwidth requirements of PeerDAS and fullDAS to ensure that the network can scale without centralized control.


· Recovery from 51% Attacks: The team is investigating partially automated recovery from 51% attacks to reduce reliance on the social layer to maintain network resilience without centralized oversight.


· Inclusion Lists for blobs and transactions: Ensure inclusion lists fully apply to blobs and native account abstraction transactions, such as the one proposed in EIP-7560, to maintain transparency and decentralization.


One of the key points of Vitalik Buterin's rebuttal focuses on the concept of single-slot finality (SSF). Currently, Ethereum blocks take about 15 minutes to be finalized, but through SSF, blocks can be proposed and finalized in the same time slot, thereby greatly shortening the finalization time and improving the overall efficiency of the network.


In general, SSF is still in the research stage, but its successful implementation is expected to allow Ethereum to leap forward again, ensuring faster transactions and reducing centralization risks by minimizing the control of any single entity over block finalization.
