Following a considerable amount of criticism from the community, Arrowhead Game Studios, the developers behind Helldivers 2, are looking again at some recent changes made to the game’s fire mechanics. The updates were made in the Escalation of Freedom patch and many players were unhappy with how they affected gameplay and realism.
Community Manager Baskinator spoke about the matter on Discord after players voiced their complaints. He thanked them for sharing their opinions and said that internal discussions were taking place within the team to figure out what would be best moving forward.
Helldivers 2 players demand change as developers reevaluate fire mechanics
The Escalation of Freedom update brought the second arc of the Galactic War and new planets, missions and various quality-of-life changes. However, it was the alterations in fire mechanics together with nerfing fire weapons that caused the most controversy among fans. They argued that such modifications take away the fun of playing this game and an immersion into its world.
The backlash was sudden and vocal, many posts on forums and social media platforms were made highlighting how frustrated players were. Fans felt like this took away a big part of what they enjoyed about playing, so they called for developers to reconsider their decision. The strength of this response made Arrowhead Game Studios take another look at its update.

Poll results reveal divided player opinions
To gauge how players are feeling about the recent update, a player-created poll was made to gather opinions. According to the results, 28% of players thought that the update was good, 30% thought it was bad and 41% were either neutral or unsure about it.
The introduction of new modifications in fire mechanics baffled many players. The community hopes that Arrowhead will revert these changes to restore the pre-Escalation of Freedom gameplay experience. The update has dramatically changed the game and ongoing talks indicate developers are taking feedback seriously.
