Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader of the United States Senate and a high-ranking member of the Democratic Party, will reportedly be attending a virtual town hall with crypto advocates in support of Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign.

According to an Aug. 14 Politico report, Senator Schumer will speak at the “Crypto4Harris” virtual event with other US lawmakers and entrepreneurs, including Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban. One of the event organizers retweeted a report suggesting that the New York senator would attend and speak.

Since the self-described grassroots group launched on Aug. 6, it has added speakers to the event, including New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, North Carolina Representative Wiley Nickel, California Representative Adam Schiff and Democratic candidates across several states. Professionals with expertise in crypto, including Crypto Council for Innovation CEO Sheila Warren, DNA Legacy Blockchain Brokerage co-founder Adilah Holivay and SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci, will also attend.

Schumer on digital assets

Coinbase’s Stand With Crypto political initiative rated Senator Schumer as “strongly” supportive of crypto for his vote in favor of a joint resolution overturning a Securities and Exchange Commission rule on banks handling crypto. The New York senator was one of 11 Democrats who sided with Republicans to pass the bill, which US President Joe Biden later vetoed.

Senator Schumer has previously called for legislation that encouraged innovation in artificial intelligence but also addressed safety concerns. In May, he joined a group of senators recommending Congress spend $32 billion over the next three years to develop AI and establish safeguards. Cointelegraph contacted the senator’s office but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

Harris campaigning on crypto?

Neither Harris nor her campaign has directly commented on digital assets since she announced her candidacy in July — except  posting a video of Republican nominee Donald Trump speaking about using Bitcoin ( BTC ) to fix the US debt. Reports suggested the vice president has hired campaign staff with seemingly favorable views of the crypto industry but also individuals who may advise maintaining the Biden administration’s position on digital assets.

The Crypto4Harris event did not appear connected to Harris’ official campaign. As of Aug. 14, market prediction platform Polymarket showed Harris ahead of Republican nominee Donald Trump in many key battleground states, with an eight-point advantage nationwide.
