AI’s potential to address Africa’s challenges emphasised by NEPAD CEO
In Addis Ababa on August 20, 2024, NEPAD CEO Nardos Bekele discussed the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in addressing Africa’s diverse challenges.
At the launch of the program "Shaping Africa's Artificial Intelligence Future Strategies for Inclusive and Collaborative National AI Policy Development," Bekele emphasised that AI is pivotal for advancing sectors like health, education, agriculture, and governance.
AI is no longer a concept of science fiction but a practical tool reshaping industries globally, according to Bekele.
She highlighted the potential of AI to expedite the achievement of Africa’s Agenda 2063, making ambitious goals more achievable.
Bekele acknowledged the progress made by countries such as Ethiopia, Morocco, and Senegal in establishing AI centers and initiatives.
However, she also pointed out significant challenges including fragmented digital infrastructure and ethical concerns that hinder AI adoption across the continent.
One major concern is data privacy, particularly in countries with inadequate data protection laws.
Ensuring ethical and responsible use of AI is crucial for its acceptance and success in Africa, Bekele stressed.
A unified approach to AI is needed to address the obstacles faced by African nations.
Developing comprehensive national AI policies aligned with the African Union’s digital transformation strategy is essential.
Bekele noted that while some African nations have made strides in creating AI strategies, many others lack clear regulatory frameworks.
Without a cohesive AI policy, Africa risks falling behind in the global AI race and missing out on the technology’s benefits.
She concluded that by collaborating, Africa can leverage AI to benefit all its nations and advance its development goals.
