Telegram founder Pavel Durov was reportedly set to dine with French President Emmanuel Macron on the day of his arrest, leading to widespread controversy.

The French investigative newspaper Le Canard Enchain revealed that Durov had informed French authorities about his planned meeting with Macron.

Durov’s arrest, which occurred on a Saturday, has sparked a political backlash, with accusations that Macron may have orchestrated the event to suppress free speech.

Florian Philippot, leader of the Les Patriotes Party, voiced his outrage on social media, accusing Macron of trickery and demanding explanations.

Philippot, translating his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), suggested that Macron’s actions were part of a broader agenda to imprison those who defend freedom of expression.

The allegations have ignited a firestorm on social media, with many users speculating that Macron set up Durov to undermine the principles of free speech.

In response to the growing controversy, the Elysee Palace quickly denied that any dinner with Durov had been planned.

Before the claims about the dinner invite surfaced, Macron addressed the situation on social media, refuting the idea that France was targeting Durov for political reasons.

Macron asserted on X that “France is deeply committed to freedom of expression and communication, to innovation, and to the spirit of entrepreneurship.”

He emphasised that the arrest of Durov was part of an ongoing judicial investigation, not a political maneuver, and that the judiciary operates independently to uphold the law.

Macron stressed that in a state governed by the rule of law, freedoms are protected within a legal framework that respects fundamental rights.

The French President’s statement aimed to clarify that Durov's arrest was a judicial matter and had nothing to do with political interference.

Despite Macron’s reassurances, the controversy continues to grow, with critics questioning the timing and motives behind the arrest.

The situation remains tense as the public and political figures demand transparency and accountability from the French government.
