Turkey seeks to join BRICS to build new alliances and expand influence
Turkey has reportedly submitted a formal request to join the BRICS economic bloc, aiming to strengthen its global influence and build new alliances beyond its traditional Western partners.
According to sources cited by Tass, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration sees the shifting geopolitical landscape as a chance to develop stronger ties with both Eastern and Western nations while continuing its commitment to NATO.
In a recent speech in Istanbul, Erdogan highlighted the importance of balanced international relations, stating that Turkey must enhance its relations with both the East and the West simultaneously.
He argued, “Turkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious, and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously. Any method other than this will not benefit Turkey, but will harm it.”
He dismissed the notion that Turkey must choose between the European Union (EU) and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), advocating instead for a "win-win" approach with all international organizations.
Turkey's push to join BRICS comes amid its longstanding frustration over the lack of progress in its bid to join the European Union.
The move is seen as a strategic effort by Ankara to diversify its global partnerships.
Sinan Ülgen, head of the Istanbul-based think tank EDAM, remarked that this strategy is not intended to replace the West but to strengthen Turkey's relations with non-Western powers as U.S. dominance declines.
The BRICS group, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded to include Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, and Egypt.
Turkey's potential inclusion is expected to be discussed at an upcoming summit in Kazan, Russia, in October, as the group considers further enlargement amid evolving global dynamics.
