Robbers seize Bitcoin using machete and Toblerone in Glasgow heist
In a strange twist on crime, a group of robbers in Scotland used a machete and a Toblerone chocolate bar to threaten a man into surrendering his Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC).
The bizarre robbery occurred in a quiet neighborhood near Glasgow, where three masked men broke into a home late at night to steal digital assets from a cryptocurrency enthusiast.
Armed with a machete and a Toblerone, the robbers forced their way inside by breaking the back door.
They used the machete to intimidate the victim, while one of them reportedly used the chocolate bar as a weapon, hitting the man multiple times.
Under pressure, the victim was compelled to access his computer and transfer an undisclosed amount of Bitcoin to the attackers' wallet.
Although shaken, the victim was left physically unharmed after the robbers fled.
In September 2024, the legal case took a significant turn.
Scottish prosecutors, under the Proceeds of Crime legislation, seized 23.5 Bitcoin connected to the crime and converted it into cash, marking a first in Scotland's legal history.
The converted Bitcoin was valued at £109,601.
John Ross Rennie, identified as the “technical brains” behind the heist, was prosecuted for his involvement.
Rennie claimed he was coerced by a close relative to handle the stolen Bitcoin, but prosecutors argued he played a key role in the crime.
Detective Inspector Craig Potter from the Cyber Investigations Unit highlighted the case's uniqueness, stating it was the first time in Scotland that cryptocurrency was seized and converted to cash through legal means.
The incident raises broader concerns about the growing trend of violence associated with cryptocurrency thefts.
As digital assets like Bitcoin continue to gain value, they attract criminals willing to go to extreme lengths, even using unconventional weapons like a Toblerone bar to carry out their crimes.
At the time of writing, the Bitcoin (BTC) price was $56,832.82.
