Elon Musk has clarified that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, will not be receiving any payment from Tesla in exchange for sharing its AI technology.

This statement came after a report from the Wall Street Journal suggested that xAI had discussed a technology-sharing arrangement with Tesla that would involve the carmaker providing revenue to the startup.

Musk addressed the situation in a post on September 8, stating, "The xAI models are gigantic, containing, in compressed form, most of human knowledge, and couldn’t possibly run on the Tesla vehicle inference computer, nor would we want them to."

He further explained that while Tesla has benefited from discussions with xAI engineers, especially in advancing its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, there is no need for Tesla to license technology from xAI.

Musk highlighted that Tesla’s AI models have demonstrated impressive capabilities by converting real-world video feeds into driving commands.

He noted that these models operate on a 300W computer, which has significantly less memory and bandwidth than a high-performance graphics processing unit (GPU) like the H100.

The system's ability to process several gigabytes of data from multiple cameras provides Tesla's AI with a broader context than typical large language models (LLMs).

Founded by Musk in July 2023, xAI aims to become a formidable competitor to established players like OpenAI.

Musk has expressed confidence that xAI could emerge as a significant rival to OpenAI by the end of 2024.

Recently, Musk revealed that xAI's Colossus 100,000 H100 training cluster has gone online and is set to double in size soon.

Developed in partnership with Nvidia, this cluster is touted as the most powerful AI training system in existence.

In a related development, former U.S. President Donald Trump recently proposed that Musk lead a government efficiency commission if he is re-elected in November 2024.

Musk responded positively, stating he would be willing to serve America in such a capacity without any pay or formal recognition.
