Elon Musk warns AI and robots could cause human existential crisis
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned that rapid advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could lead to a "crisis of meaning" for humanity.
Speaking at the 2024 All-In Summit, Musk shared his belief that the rise of AI could make traditional human jobs obsolete, pushing society to find new ways to create purpose and fulfillment.
“I think the actual issue, the most likely issue, is how do we find meaning in a world where AI can do everything we can do, but better? That is perhaps the bigger challenge,” Musk said.
He recalled comments he made at the AI Safety Summit in England last year, where he suggested that human labor might become a thing of the past as AI evolves.
Musk noted that the Turing test, once a standard for measuring a machine's ability to replicate human intelligence, is now losing its relevance.
"Although at this point, I know more and more people who are retired, and they seem to enjoy that life, but I think that maybe there'll be some crisis of meaning because the computer can do everything you can do, but better," he added.
Musk highlighted that the economic potential of AI and robotics is immense.
With the development of autonomous cars and humanoid robots, Musk believes the economy could grow exponentially.
“If you've got humanoid robots—when there's no real limit on the number of humanoid robots—and they can operate very intelligently, then there's no actual limit to the economy,” he explained.
He provided insights into Tesla's progress with its Optimus robot, designed to mimic human movements.
The prototype version of the robot has 22 degrees of freedom in its hand, nearly matching the dexterity of the human hand.
“The next generation hand has 22 degrees of freedom, which we think is enough to do almost anything that a human can do,” Musk noted.
Musk predicts a future where robots might outnumber humans.
“I think the number of robots will vastly exceed the number of humans,” he said. "You have to say, ‘Who would not want their robot buddy?’ Everyone wants a robot buddy."
