Trump launches $100 commemorative coins as campaign donations lag
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has introduced his first official commemorative silver coin, “The President Donald J. Trump First Edition Silver Medallion”.
The coins, launched on September 21, symbolise American freedom and prosperity.
However, this launch coincides with Trump’s campaign facing challenges in keeping pace with Vice President Kamala Harris in terms of fundraising.
The Trump campaign's donation efforts have slowed, with Harris significantly outpacing him.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings, Harris raised over $189 million in August, while Trump secured $44 million.
In total, Harris’s fundraising, including support from the Democratic National Committee and other groups, reached $361 million, whereas Trump’s campaign has garnered $130 million.
Trump's efforts come as he seeks to close this gap.
In a statement on the Trump Coins website, Trump emphasised that these coins represent the American movement.
“This beautiful, limited-edition coin commemorates our movement, our fight for freedom, prosperity, and putting America first,” he said.
Notably, the coins are not affiliated with his campaign and are not sold by the Trump Organization or related entities.
The launch of Trump Coins is part of a broader initiative to engage his base and appeal to different sectors.
Recently, Trump also unveiled a DeFi venture and released his fourth NFT collection, signaling a growing focus on the crypto community.
His fundraising has notably attracted support from crypto figures, including contributions from the Winklevoss twins.
Despite these efforts, Trump’s chances of winning the 2024 election appear uncertain.
Polymarket data shows Harris with a slight edge, holding a 51% chance of victory compared to Trump’s 49%.
The upcoming months will be crucial as both candidates continue to secure financial backing for their campaigns.
