Elon Musk hosted Nayib Bukele, President of El Salvador, at Tesla's factory in Austin, Texas, where the two discussed the societal impacts of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics.
A video that Bukele shared on X (formerly Twitter) on September 21 shows Musk warmly greeting the president and giving him a tour of the facility.
Musk responded to the post by praising Bukele as a leader and highlighting the meaningful discussions they had.
El Salvador, known for adopting Bitcoin (BTC) as a legal tender three years ago, is now expanding its focus to technologies like AI as part of its plan to reduce reliance on the US dollar and diversify its economy. Bukele's vision behind this initiative focused on increasing financial inclusion and attracting tech-based financial services to the nation.
However, while the country has earned over $31 million from its Bitcoin move, Bukele has acknowledged that Bitcoin adoption has been slower than expected. Large businesses like McDonald's accept it, but nationwide usage is not as widespread as the government had hoped.
In another move to make El Salvador a hub for crypto, they launched a certification program to provide Bitcoin-related training to 80,000 public sector employees. This program aims to better equip government workers to handle Bitcoin policy effectively.
The meeting between Musk and Bukele highlights their shared interest in technology’s role in shaping the future as El Salvador continues its push for digital transformation.
