- OpenAI CTO Mira Murati has stepped down from her position.
- Murati’s departure has drawn praise and recognition from industry peers.
- Recent shifts in OpenAI’s leadership are generating curiosity and raising questions.
The artificial intelligence startup OpenAI has stunned the world with impressive growth over the past year, driven by projects like ChatGPT that have captured global attention. At the core of its innovation are key executives who have played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s trajectory.
However, the firm has been undergoing leadership shifts in recent months, and the latest to depart from the team is its Chief Technology Officer.
OpenAI CTO Murati Bids Farewell

Murati, who joined OpenAI in 2018, served as the firm’s technical lead during her tenure, overseeing the development of some of its most innovative technologies that have gained global recognition.
Commenting on her exit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed gratitude for Murati’s impact. “It’s hard to overstate how much Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and to us all personally. I feel tremendous gratitude towards her for what she has helped us build and accomplish,” he wrote.
The former CTO’s resignation has also drawn tribute from other industry members.
Mira Murati Receives Warm Ovation
Open AI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap praised Murati’s leadership and friendship, stating, “Mira is an amazing leader and equally a great friend. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner these last 6+ years, and I’m so grateful for her contributions to OpenAI. Chief among those is the incredible technical team she’s built, whose leadership will keep pushing the frontier.”
Another senior member of OpenAI, Jason Kwon, echoed similar sentiments.
“What we choose to do with life is just as much about who we choose to do it with. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner and friend,” commented Kwon.Other industry members contributed to Murati’s tribute. In a lighthearted tribute, one commentator quipped , “Looks like Mira Murati just pulled off the ultimate AI-powered mic drop. After leading the future of tech, what’s next? Building the Matrix or binge-watching it?”
On the Flipside
- Mira Murati’s departure coincides with the exits of other key OpenAI executives, Barret Zoph and Bob McGrew , raising speculation about potential leadership troubles within the organization.
- The exits of the executives follow OpenAI’s recent switch from nonprofit to for-profit.
- Industry figures, including Elon Musk, have criticized OpenAI’s for-profit switch as illegal.
Why This Matters
Mira Murati’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in OpenAI’s leadership, as reflected by the widespread recognition she has received. However, while no direct links have been confirmed, the timing of her exit along with other key executives, particularly following the company’s recent switch to a for-profit model, suggests deeper dynamics could be at play.
