Republican candidate criticises crypto PAC support for Democrat
Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers has voiced his frustration after the crypto super PAC Fairshake opted to support his Democratic opponent, Elissa Slotkin, with a $3 million ad campaign.
Rogers, a long-time advocate for cryptocurrency, expressed confusion over the decision, especially since Slotkin had previously received an "F" rating from the Stand With Crypto watchdog group.
“There is nobody more confused than me,” Rogers remarked. “I guess the price to go from an ‘F’ to an ‘A’ is $3 million.”
Fairshake, which is funded by key crypto players such as Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz, has raised over $276 million, making it the most significant crypto-focused special interest group in the 2024 election cycle.
Rogers, who has supported crypto initiatives and engaged with industry stakeholders for years, felt slighted by the PAC’s choice to back Slotkin.
Rogers further claimed that what he repeatedly heard was, “They needed a Democrat, they needed a Democrat, they needed a Democrat,” implying that Fairshake may be attempting to strike a balance between political parties.
Fairshake’s decision mirrors a broader trend seen in recent political endorsements from crypto advocacy groups, who appear to be cautiously aligning their support across both parties.
In this case, the PAC’s backing of a Democrat with limited crypto credentials over a pro-industry Republican has raised questions about its strategy.
The Senate race in Michigan is considered highly influential for determining future Congressional control, and Rogers’ disappointment reflects the high stakes involved for both candidates and the broader crypto industry.
