Bitcoiners launch rescue mission after Hurricane Helene
A group of Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) enthusiasts in North Carolina is organising a search and rescue operation to help communities in the state's western regions severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.
The local Bitcoin community is focusing on areas that have received little state or federal assistance, leaving them cut off from essential supplies and emergency services.
The rescue effort, set to begin on October 4, will involve a convoy of 12 volunteers, including emergency room physicians, retired military personnel, and volunteers.
According to Dan Spuller from the North Carolina Blockchain Association, the team will be equipped with six full-sized trucks, utility task vehicles, trailers, and even a horse and mule to access difficult terrain in the Appalachian Mountains.
Chainsaws and medical supplies will be used to clear paths and search for missing individuals.
The initiative is being organised by the North Carolina Blockchain Initiative, the Bitcoin Mining Museum, and HM Tech, a Bitcoin mining and repair company.
Their primary focus will be Ashe County and other “overlooked” areas of western North Carolina that have been isolated and left without electricity.
Spuller highlighted the importance of the effort, stating, “The challenges in Western North Carolina are immense, but the way the Bitcoin community has come together to deliver aid is inspiring.”
The operation is accepting donations in both Bitcoin and fiat currencies to support the convoy’s mission.
Hurricane Helene has caused widespread damage, resulting in the loss of at least 189 lives across seven states, including Florida, Alabama, and North Carolina, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.
The storm, rated a category 4 hurricane, has left significant flooding and road closures in its wake.
At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price was $61,315.89.
