In August 2024, after his detention, Telegram founder Pavel Durov and his partner Yulia Vavilova went through a personal disaster. A premature miscarriage occurred in early October for Vavilova, who later disclosed she was expecting.
According to Durov, the immense stress from the legal pressure, cyberbullying, and her own detainment contributed to this loss. Vavilova, a social media influencer, detailed her heartbreaking experience in a Telegram post , where she blamed the stress surrounding the arrest for the loss of their unborn child.
Legal Pressure and Health Impact
Vavilova first learned of her pregnancy just days after Durov’s arrest . On August 25, sitting in a café, she discovered she was expecting. Yet, due to Durov’s detainment and mounting legal issues, she couldn’t immediately share the news.
Her doctor advised her against responding to law enforcement for weeks to avoid stress, but eventually, she had to submit herself for questioning. By early October, the pregnancy reached a critical point. During a routine check-up on October 4, doctors delivered devastating news—the baby’s heart had stopped beating.
The French Investigation and Telegram’s Response
Durov’s arrest on August 24, 2024 , in France was tied to accusations that Telegram lacked sufficient content moderation, allowing the spread of illegal material. Despite French authorities stating the charges weren’t politically motivated, Durov and his supporters argue otherwise.
