HBO documentary fails to reveal Bitcoin creator’s identity
HBO’s highly anticipated documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery aired on Tuesday, aiming to unmask Bitcoin’s (CRYPTO:BTC) elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
Directed by Cullen Hoback, the film dives into Bitcoin’s origins and features early contributors to its development, including Blockstream CEO Adam Back.
However, the film ultimately falls short of providing any definitive answers.
The documentary zeroes in on Peter Todd, a Bitcoin Core developer, presenting several clues to suggest he may be Nakamoto.
One of the central arguments involves Todd’s forum interactions with Satoshi, where the director claims Todd may have been continuing Satoshi’s thoughts under a different alias.
Additionally, Hoback highlights Todd’s teenage work with Hashcash, his writing style, and the non-professional coding level of Bitcoin’s C++ codebase.
Despite these suggestions, the film does not present conclusive evidence.
Critics, including Samson Mow, CEO of Bitcoin technology company JAN3, dismissed the theory as speculative.
Mow, who appears in the documentary, said, “I did say on record in the documentary that it’s probably not Peter.”
Just before the documentary aired, Todd himself responded to the speculation on X (formerly Twitter), stating clearly, “I’m not Satoshi.”
The documentary has been criticised for relying too heavily on circumstantial evidence, following a familiar path in past attempts to unmask Nakamoto.
The film revisits figures like Adam Back and Hal Finney, who have long been linked to the Bitcoin mystery.
While *Money Electric* offers compelling interviews and high production value, it has been met with skepticism from the crypto community.
Many see the film as another failed attempt to solve one of modern finance’s greatest mysteries.
As Bitcoin remained steady at $62,200 following the documentary’s release, the quest to uncover Nakamoto’s true identity continues to be unresolved.
At the time of writing, the Bitcoin price was $62,410.92.
