Justin Sun Envisions Liberland as New “Beacon of Freedom”
- Liberland exists in the gray area of international law.
- Justin Sun wants Liberland to be the “freest nation in the world.”
- Liberland governance is managed on-chain.
Liberland, a tiny three-square-mile micronation wedged between Croatia and Serbia, is on a mission to establish itself as a legitimate country. Despite its bold aspirations, it remains unrecognized by international law, existing in a legal gray area.

While many have dismissed Liberland’s goal of becoming the “freest nation in the world” as unrealistic, Justin Sun’s recent appointment as Prime Minister has reignited interest in the fledgling nation’s libertarian vision.
Justin Sun Promotes Libertarianism
TRON founder Justin Sun recently outlined his vision for Liberland after being appointed Prime Minister. He emphasized that the nation’s libertarian ideals of minimal government, low taxes, and personal freedom are key to achieving its goals of stability and prosperity.
Sun sees his role as advancing these values not only within Liberland but also globally, hoping to inspire other countries to embrace libertarian principles. He believes that by showcasing how these ideals lead to stability and growth, Liberland can become a model for others to follow.
In selling this vision further, the TRON founder highlighted Liberland’s unique governance model, which has no mandatory obligations, voluntary taxes, and zero coercive measures. Sun believes this will establish Liberland as a “beacon of freedom and individual autonomy.”
Liberland Governance Is Fully on Blockchain
Liberland is the first nation to fully integrate its governance and legislation on a blockchain. Built on Polkadot’s Substrate framework, Liberland’s proof-of-stake blockchain underpins its unique political system, ensuring transparency and decentralization.
The nation-state operates two tokens: the Liberland Dollar (LLD,) which is used to pay gas fees, manage contracts, and run companies, and the Liberland Merit (LLM,) which functions as a governance token enabling political participation rights. LLD surged over 200% to $3.59 following Sun’s appointment as PM.
Every new law must be approved by a citizen referendum, with the blockchain ensuring secure, tamper-proof voting that is auditable by all participants.
Must Be Physically Fit to Settle
Despite Sun’s ambitious vision for Liberland, the micronation faces significant hurdles. The land it claims sits in a disputed zone between Croatia and Serbia, lacking formal recognition as a sovereign state.
Attempts to settle the territory in the past have led to confrontations with Croatian authorities, who have forcibly removed settlers and their belongings.
However, the Croatian border has been officially opened since August 2023, and plans to build a government building and a treehouse resort are underway.
Those looking to settle face challenging conditions, requiring physical endurance, mental resilience, and self-sufficiency to thrive in its undeveloped landscape. Liberland has called on settlers to bring their own outdoor equipment and food.
So far, Liberland has attracted 1,000 citizens and 4,000 e-citizens.
On the Flipside
- The concept of micronations is not new, with many examples in the US alone.
- The timing of Sun‘s appointment coincides with growing dissatisfaction over inflation, high taxes, and government overreach in many developed nations.
- E-residency costs $150 , while full residency comes in at $10,100.
Why This Matters
Liberland’s ambitious experiment signals a pivotal moment in which crypto’s abstract promises of freedom and decentralization face their ultimate test: building a functioning nation-state from the ground up.
