Why OP Stack Chains Will Use Agglayer Over Superchain: Polygon CEO
- Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron has argued why OP Stack Chains will integrate with the AggLayer.
- Boiron’s arguments range from cost to sovereignty.
- The Polygon chief has repeatedly suggested that an OP Stack chains are coming to the AggLayer.
In a quest to scale, Ethereum ‘s roadmap has become increasingly rollup-centric, leading to the emergence of several Layer 2 chains . The Layer 2 boom, however, has not come without costs or problems. One of these concerns has been fragmentation, which has led competing Layer 2 solution providers to propose interoperability solutions.
While the interoperability solutions developed by most Layer 2 stack providers are limited to users of their stack, Polygon (POL) has taken a different approach. In collaboration with several industry leaders like Espresso, Gateway.fm, NEAR, and Succinct Labs, Polygon (POL) Labs is developing a solution called the AggLayer with the potential to connect all of Web3 on Ethereum.

Recently, Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron has outlined why users of the tech stack of arguably its biggest competitor, Optimism , will plug into the AggLayer instead of connecting to Optimism’s federated network of chains: the Superchain .
An “Obvious” Choice?
Polygon (POL) Labs CEO Marc Boiron has made a case for why OP Stack Chains will want to plug into the AggLayer instead of the Superchain. “I think it is pretty obvious honestly,” the Polygon (POL) Labs chief asserted as he explained his reasoning in an X post on Monday, October 14.
For one, Boiron highlighted that, unlike the Superchain, AggLayer Chains will not have to pay to use the technology with a share of their revenue. At the same time, the Polygon Labs chief highlighted that AggLayer chains will be able to connect to chains beyond the Ethereum ecosystem. Furthermore, Boiron noted that unlike the Superchain, where participants have to abide by the Law of Chains , AggLayer chains will remain fully sovereign, able to govern their chain how they like.
Beyond these, the Polygon (POL) chief also noted that the AggLayer’s reliance on zero-knowledge technology made it more future-proof.
Boiron’s recent statements come as he has repeatedly suggested that OP Stack chains will connect to the AggLayer.
Is an OP Stack Chain Coming to the AggLayer?
“OP stack chains will be connecting to the AggLayer, which will show that Superchain chains can connect as well,” the Polygon (POL) Labs chief first asserted on August 19.
Boiron reiterated this view on Monday, October 14, asserting that it will happen “soon.” While the Polygon chief has refrained from specifying which OP Stack chains will be joining the AggLayer, at least one has alluded to doing so.
In April 2024, mobile-focused Layer 1 blockchain Celo disclosed that it had chosen Optimism’s OP Stack for its Layer 2 transition over Polygon’s CDK and Matter Labs’ ZK Stack. Still, Celo suggested that it desired interoperability with other tech stacks, highlighting that this could be possible by incorporating Polygon’s Type 1 prover , which any chain can leverage with minimal code modifications to plug into the AggLayer.
On the Flipside
- If and when an Optimistic rollup will plug into the AggLayer remains to be seen.
- Several core features of the AggLayer have yet to be launched.
Why This Matters
Fragmentation has emerged as a major UX challenge for Ethereum Layer 2 chains. The AggLayer is positioning itself to tackle this problem for Ethereum and the entire Web3 space, which could be a significant boon for POL.
