About Runes
The Bitcoin Runes protocol is a new fungible token standard on Bitcoin, launched at the end of April 2024 by Casey Rodarmor. This protocol aims to simplify the creation and management of fungible tokens on the Bitcoin network. Unlike Bitcoin's Ordinals protocol, which embeds unique, non-replaceable tokens permanently onto satoshis, Runes issues interchangeable tokens embedded onto satoshis. Bitcoin Runes operates on a UTXO-based protocol, where each transaction begins by selecting unspent Bitcoin pieces to create new transactions. This approach ensures the uniqueness and authenticity of each Bitcoin by tracing its origin back to creation, preventing unauthorized duplication. This feature provides confidence that any Bitcoin owned or transacted is genuine and verifiably yours.

The Runes Protocol introduces a new token standard for creating fungible tokens on the Bitcoin network. Unlike BRC-20 tokens, which encode data on individual satoshis, Runes utilizes Bitcoin's existing UTXO model to minimize additional data stored on the blockchain. This specialized approach simplifies the generation and management of fungible tokens on the Bitcoin network.
