'BGB Already Turned Green On The First Day Of The Year', Then Straight Up To US$0.68 After indications showed positive momentum for BGB last week, the token made a huge jump in the first week of 2024 - going from January 01's opening price of US$0.5795 to US$0.6808 (+17.5%) on January 04. Distribution trend occurs but levels are still much higher than that during the 2-week period between BGB hitting US$0.70 and New Year. Bitcoin is the only one in the Top 5 to also have a positive week with 4.1% gains; the rest, especially XRP suffered from the faltered hype around Bitcoin ETF approvals. BGB volume increased by 19.4% over the last seven days, leading to a net increase of 11.4% in liquidity. Others' volume rose mostly due to selling pressure as prices went down; BGB has been keen on tracking Bitcoin in terms of volume-to-mcap ratio. 2023 was a wonderful year for BGB and its investors. Losses Before Decision Day On Friday (January 05), the first news to drop is the U.S. job report for December 2023 , which implies solid hiring at 216,000 new jobs added, 3.7% unemployment rate and 4.1% YoY average hourly earnings increase compared to the forecast of 170,000, 3.8% and 3.9%. That means the likelihood of the FED cutting down rates in March is down, now at 60.9% , as a strong labour market does not corroborate the story of tamed inflation as told in the most recent inflation report and thus shall not motivate the FED to lower interest rates in the upcoming FOMCs. We also see the spot Bitcoin ETF applications of all 11 issuers amended on Friday after the SEC met with NASDAQ, NYSE and CBOE two days earlier. However, these amendments weren't public until January 04-05, which was already passed the 'rumoured ' January 03 reveal awaited by the broader markets, hence there was an aggregate effect on crypto and crypto stock prices: the global crypto market cap lost 3.9% in value, Bitcoin dropped to as low as US$40.8K, all crypto stocks in red except for BITI a.k.a. the short Bitcoin ETF. Bitget Spot Trading ’s volume, Bitget Futures Markets ’s average crypto OI and average Bitcoin OI all went down last week as a direct result of the disappointment coming from no news on spot Bitcoin ETF approvals. However, W1 2024 arrived with more than just profit shedding. Two DeFi protocols, Radiant Capital and Gamma Strategies, fell prey to hackers' scheme and lost US$4.5 million and US$3.4 million, respectively. Meanwhile, the Solana ecosystem witnessed another exit scam with approximately US$2 million in users' funds drained from MangoFarmSOL. The appointed security auditor of this farming protocol Foobar was the first one to warn users of MangoFarmSOL's frontend being compromised and later suggested this might be a rugpull. That combined is a near-US$10 million loss within the first seven days of 2024. What Are Bitcoin Ordinals? Everything You Need to Know About Bitcoin NFT

This article gives an overview of Bitcoin Ordinals in layman terms and analyzes their advantages. TL;DR - Bitcoin Ordinals are a system that allows people to order, identify, and inscribe digital content on satoshi to create digital artifacts. - As Ordinals were only introduced in January, the tools that can be used for its creation and trading are underdeveloped. - Ordinals can open up various new use cases for Bitcoin, such as NFT and new token standard. - Digital artifacts created by ordinals also have many advantages over other NFTs. What Are Bitcoin Ordinals? Bitcoin Ordinals are a way of attaching, or “inscribing” digital contents, such as images, videos, and more to individual satoshis on the Bitcoin blockchain. A satoshi, or sat for short, is the smallest unit of BTC, with 1 satoshi equal to 1/100,000,000 of a BTC. Bitcoin Ordinals involve two key components: ordinals and inscriptions. Ordinals refer to a system that orders satoshis in a unique way, creating the non-fungible property necessary for NFTs. In simple terms, ordinals assign a specific number to each satoshi, making it distinguishable from others. This numbering system ensures that each satoshi has a unique identifier. Inscriptions, on the other hand, represent the actual content attached to satoshis. They can be images, text, videos, or any other data that users associate with an NFT. In other NFTs, this content is often referred to as metadata. Unlike other kinds of NFTs, inscriptions are created as an immutable on-chain presence of digital content on the Bitcoin blockchain. They are integrated directly into the blockchain and do not require any separate layers or changes to the Bitcoin protocol. They can be accessed and traded using BTC itself. The creator of Bitcoin Ordinals, Casey Rodarmor, prefers to call inscriptions “digital artifacts” instead of NFT, as he thinks the former is a more familiar and easily understood term, and inscriptions can have applications beyond just NFTs. However, since the concept of NFT is more familiar to the blockchain community, many keep calling inscriptions Bitcoin NFT. Bitcoin Ordinals have gained immense popularity and led to increased usage, fees, and storage space on the Bitcoin network. Since January, a total of 11.8 million inscriptions have been created, taking up $44.5 million in fees. They have the potential to expand the utility of Bitcoin beyond being solely a "store of value" and contribute to its applications. Nevertheless, Bitcoin is designed to have less programmability than Ethereum, so BRC-20 tokens can't do as many things. So far, the most common use for Ordinals is for text inscriptions, followed by image inscriptions. Some attach audios, videos, video games, and codes (as in the case of BRC-20) to satoshis, but those use cases are not as popular. Most popular types of inscriptions overtime (Source: @dgtl_assets on Dune) How Do Bitcoin Ordinals Work? Ordinals were made possible by two updates to the Bitcoin Protocol: Segregated Witness (SegWit) in 2017 and Taproot in 2021. These updates expanded the amount of arbitrary data that could be stored on the blockchain, allowing for the inclusion of images, videos, and other media types. While these updates were not specifically intended for NFTs, they inadvertently provided the necessary infrastructure for ordinals and inscriptions to exist. SegWit introduced a separate section called "witness data'' in Bitcoin transactions, which supported arbitrary data transmission. This allowed for larger amounts of data to be stored within Bitcoin's blocksize limit. It was the first step towards ordinal NFTs, as it expanded the limits of how much arbitrary data could be included in a transaction. Taproot, implemented in 2021, further enhanced Bitcoin's privacy, scalability, and security. It made it easier to store arbitrary witness data and relaxed the limitations on the amount of arbitrary data that could be placed in a Bitcoin transaction. This upgrade paved the way for ordinals to work using Taproot script-path spend scripts. To better understand how ordinals work, consider the example of tokenIDs in non-Bitcoin NFTs. TokenIDs provide uniqueness to each NFT, allowing users to differentiate them from one another. This numbering system is maintained through a first-in, first-out process during transfers. It's important to note that ordinals don't violate BTC’s fungibility. The Bitcoin blockchain itself doesn't recognize this ordering system, but a community of developers has acknowledged its significance and created tools that take advantage of ordinals to expand on Bitcoin’s use cases. Regarding metadata, non-Bitcoin blockchains allow arbitrary data to be attached to NFTs to represent various digital assets. In the case of ordinals, metadata is held within the witness data of a Bitcoin transaction. This data, referred to as inscriptions, is "inscribed" within a specific part of the transaction and is typically associated with a particular satoshi. Ordinals are the tool that allows users to create, see, and keep track of the extra information connected to each sat on the Bitcoin blockchain. The special thing about ordinals is that they don't create new tokens, but instead work with the existing satoshis. This means that the inscribed sats can be sent and spent just like any other sat, so it can be said that sats somehow maintain their fungibility while having non-fungibility. How to Create Bitcoin Ordinals? At the beginning, only those who are in possession of a Bitcoin full node and a special wallet that can manipulate satoshis could create an inscription. Now, there are tools available to automate this process, such as Gamma or the Ordinals Bot, making it easier for non-technical users and reducing associated risks. To create an inscription, users need to send a transaction involving an individual satoshi to a Taproot-compatible wallet and attach the desired metadata as part of the transaction. The users need to ensure the desired satoshi is not used as a network fee. It's worth noting that the tools and ecosystem around Bitcoin Ordinals are still in their infancy. The very first ordinals were only inscribed a few months ago. As more non-tech users show interest and demand increases, the ecosystem and tools will likely evolve to become more user-friendly. How to Transfer and Trade Bitcoin Ordinals? As Bitcoin Ordinals are relatively new, the tools for transferring and trading inscriptions are not mature yet, like those used for creating Bitcoin Ordinals. However, there are a few steps you can take to own an inscription for yourself if you are interested. First, research and explore projects that create digital artifacts, such as Ordinal Punks, Ord Rocks, and Taproot Wizards. Since Bitcoin Ordinals are new, they may not be available for trading on public platforms. That’s why you need to join the Discord servers of the projects you’re keen on. These projects organize trading on their servers, allowing buyers and sellers to easily trade. They have systems in place for sellers to set their prices and for buyers to place bids. Meanwhile, the contents of inscriptions are always stored on the Bitcoin blockchain itself, making it more durable and less likely to be lost. Also, inscriptions are always immutable, meaning they cannot be modified or deleted by anyone after they are created. In contrast, common NFTs are mutable, which means that their content can be changed or removed by the owner of the NFT contract. Furthermore, ordinals and inscriptions need BTC for minting, transferring, and storage, making them inherently scarcer and potentially more valuable. NFTs from other chains can be minted in unlimited quantities with a single transaction, making them less scarce. Last but not least, ordinals and inscriptions do not claim to support on-chain royalties, as it can be challenging to enforce. Ethereum NFTs have faced confusion and challenges with on-chain royalties, causing negativity within the ecosystem. How Gamma Squeezes Can Exacerbate Short Squeezes

Earlier, we discussed on Bitget Academy what short squeezes are and how they can occur under certain market conditions. If you’ve yet to read the article or need a refresher, you can head over to our Academy page. For those of you who have absorbed everything you needed to know about short squeezes and the GameStop incident, this article will be exploring yet another market phenomenon that can turn the already volatile situation of a short squeeze into an even more unstable condition. These are known as gamma squeezes. What are Call Options? Just like understanding short squeezes, to grasp the idea of gamma squeezes, we’ll first have to explore the concept of call options. Similar to futures, options are part of the derivatives family and work along the same lines, although in this case, the holder of the option has the right, but not the obligation, to purchase or sell cryptocurrency at a predetermined price. This means investors will generally have more flexibility when it comes to options. However, to take advantage of this instrument, purchasing an option requires a premium upfront, so any change in the price of the underlying cryptocurrency in your favour will have to cover that premium before generating profits for you. There’ll also be an expiry date, after which your option can no longer be exercised. For example, if the price of BTC is now at US$16,300 and you predict it will go upwards, you can purchase call options from a seller who might agree on a price of USD$16,500 and a premium of US$20 per BTC. If you buy call options to purchase three BTC at those prices, your premium will therefore be US$60. Subsequently, when the price of BTC goes up to US$16,800, you can buy them at US$16,500 and sell them immediately, making a total profit of US$900. Deducting the premium of US$60, your net profit will be US$840. In the case that the price of BTC actually drops, however, your exposure will be limited to just US$60, as you have no obligation to exercise your call option. How Call Options Increase the Snowballing Effect of Short Squeezes As we explained in our article on short squeezes, the phenomenon is essentially created through a snowballing effect where those losing out from short positions are being forced to buy back shares at a higher price, increasing market demand and pushing prices up. This then forces other short sellers to do the same, inflating prices even further. Call options have the ability to make this snowball grow in size even quicker, exacerbating the situation in what’s called a gamma squeeze. A gamma squeeze often occurs when a stock or cryptocurrency has attracted a large amount of short-dated call options. Investors who, contrary to short sellers, believe that the asset is about to rise in price will have entered into these agreements in anticipation of a surge, and once a short squeeze occurs, the asse t price begins shooting up rapidly. To capitalise on this opportunity to buy low and sell high, traders will flock to exercise their call options, increasing buying activity on the market and therefore pushing prices up even higher. As prices surge quicker, more call options are triggered, subsequently creating yet another snowballing effect. Profiting From Gamma Squeezes Can Be Risky As with any other significant market shift in direction, profits can be made during a gamma squeeze. Because a short squeeze or gamma squeeze results in prices for the underlying asset to rise sharply, those who enter the market early and manage to buy low will have an opportunity to sell back at a much higher point, generating profits you don’t normally see during normal market conditions. Indeed, this was what happened during the GameStop incident back in 2021, when its stock price surged over 400% at one point, causing immense losses to institutional investors shorting it and massive profits for retail investors going long. However, any form of trading possesses inherent risk, and with gamma squeezes, timing is absolutely crucial. Because price surges can occur so quickly, traders might not be able to enter the market at the ideal price point. At the same time, since the price of the cryptocurrency in question has been largely inflated by a gamma squeeze and not based on any true, underlying value of the token or blockchain development, the speculation can drive steep price reversals, leaving many investors plagued by significant losses if they didn’t manage to exit the market in time. With this said, traders looking to profit off of a gamma squeeze should manage risk appropriately and make sure to do sufficient research before investing.
